Our Gratitude!

We are so grateful to all the people who responded to our end of the year appeal and sent us generous financial donations. We also want to thank everyone who brought gift cards, food and personal care items into the Cupboard over the holidays; they were most welcome.

A brief look back at the year 2011:  We have seen a significant increase in the number of people in need of supplementary food over the past twelve months.  We served 487 households in December 2011; more than twice the number served in December 2010. We are seeing more and more people struggling to make ends meet, as prices rise, jobs and homes are lost, and wages cannot keep up with the costs of living.

However, we believe that we can look forward to 2012 with confidence, with the knowledge that we have such strong community support. We also have a hard-working group of volunteers who run the Cupboard, and who firmly believe that no one should go hungry and that there is enough food for everyone.

All of us at the West Chester Food Cupboard wish you a Happy New Year!

Your Support

In this time of economic uncertainty the Food Cupboard and those in need count on your support more than ever. Your gift is extremely important to us because it provides resources that make an immediate impact – that will help us through these tough times.  Your gift of $50, $100, $500, $1,000, or any amount of your choosing, can make such a difference to that elderly person, that child, that person living on a fixed income or disability, and to those of our neighbors who have recently lost their jobs.

You can choose to make a donation to provide something special to our clients - fruit, eggs, rice, shampoo, etc. - or perhaps just donate to our general operating fund to help us pay our rent and bills – just let us know.

Checks can be made payable to:

OR you can make a donation online via PayPal.

To our produce contributors:

Dear Friends,

We want to thank everyone who contributed homegrown produce to the West Chester Food Cupboard this past year.  We are so grateful for the delicious and nutritious fruit and vegetables that kept coming and coming, despite the wild weather we have experienced this growing season.

We all know how important it is for everyone to have fresh produce as part of their daily diet.  The clients who come here for supplementary food each month certainly loved receiving it.

Please know that we understand how much hard work goes into planting, growing, weeding, watering and harvesting a garden and we thank you so much for all that hard work on our behalf.  This year’s periods of very hot weather followed by the incredible rainy weather must have taxed even the most experienced gardeners!

We continue to see more and more people in West Chester who are struggling to make ends meet.  Thanks to the kindness of people like you, who believe as we do that no one should go hungry and that there is enough food for everyone, we are confident that we will continue to be able to meet their needs in the days ahead.

Letter to the Editor

Published September 13, 2011 - Daily Local News

Dear Editor,

The U.S. Department of Agriculture just released its latest numbers on the state of hunger in America. I’m saddened by the results. The new figures show that 16 million kids faced hunger in 2010.  That's 1 in 5 kids nationwide.

With high unemployment and food and gas prices on the rise, millions of families – many in our own community - are struggling to make ends meet and our children are suffering the terrible consequences.

Here at the West Chester Food Cupboard we served 618 children under the age of 18 with supplementary food last month, a record number for us.  The number of households coming in August was an incredible 553 (up from 300 in 2009)  While we are blessed by the generous support of members of our community, we realize that food cupboards alone cannot solve the problem of hunger and food insufficiency.   Our national food and nutrition programs for kids - such as the School Breakfast Program - can be the difference between empty stomachs and good health. However, these programs need to reach more of our children at risk of hunger.

We all have a stake in ensuring that our children have enough to eat to learn, grow and thrive which is why I support Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign. They are working to connect kids at risk of hunger with programs that will keep them nourished.

I encourage everyone to support the West Chester Food Cupboard or a food cupboard in your area, and take the No Kid Hungry Pledge (http://www.strength.org/) to be a part of the great work being done to end childhood hunger.  No child should go hungry.  No one should go hungry.  There is enough food for everyone.

Sincerely,
Fiona Allison
